Fill in the blanks:
1. I was going to market in the evening. I was going on foot. A bus was coming in the opposite direction. There were many people at the bus stop. When the bus halted all the people rushed into the bus, so they pushed one another. There was a quarrel among them. The conductor shouted at them. Some people listened to him. The others didn’t bother about it.

2. The children wanted to eat cake, so they asked me to prepare it. I took flour in a bowl. I mixed eggs, milk, butter and sugar. Then I baked the cake in an oven. After the cake was ready, I cut it with a knife. Then I distributed it among the children. The children thought that I had bought the cake from a bakery. When I told them that the cake was made by me, they were surprised. They thanked me for the cake and went --------(no article) home.

3. I had been to Kashmir in the last summer vacation. I went there with my family. Kashmir is in the northern part of India. It is famous for shawls. People from different parts of the world come here to admire nature’s beauty. In winter the ground is covered with snow. We stayed for two weeks and then returned home.

4. I have a daughter. She was born in 2001. She was born on the 20th June. She is a very sweet child. She is fond of ice creams. Whenever she eats ice creams, she falls sick. She suffers from severe cold and cough. Even now, she is ill with cough. She has been suffering since yesterday. I am planning to take her to take her to hospital this evening. If you are free, why don’t you come with us? I have already taken an appointment with the doctor. If we start at 5 o clock, we can return by 8 o clock.

5. Sachin is one the best batsmen in the world. He plays for India . He has won many awards for his performance. He has been playing cricket for three decades. He has visited many countries to play cricket. He performed very well in the last series. He was appreciated by the Prime Minister and the President. I feel very happy for that. India is proud of him. I wish he well continue to play well in the future.

6. Mahatma Gandhi was born at Porabandhar in Gujarat . He went to South Africa to practice law. He participated in the freedom struggle and went to prison many times. He struggled for freedom and freed our country from slavery. He fought against the Britishers and many leaders joined none him in the freedom struggle. He believed in non-violence. Gandhiji is worthy of remembrance.

7. I generally wake up by 6 o’ clock in the morning. After that I complete my ablution and then have coffee. I meditate for ½ an hour. Then I spend an hour in the kitchen in preparing food. After that I get ready and go to office. I generally go by bus. I reach office at 7 o’ clock. By the time I return it is 9 o’ clock at night. After that I have dinner and go to bed.

8. Cold drinks that are available in the market have been found to be highly acidic. The acidity is damaging for teeth and bones. After the age of thirty the growth of bones slows down and they begin wearing away. Regular intake of acidic food makes it worse. Calcium is the most important ingredient of bones. When bones start wearing away, the melted calcium is deposited in different parts of our body and this weakens the power of the kidney. Cold drinks, therefore, hasten the degeneration of the kidney. They also have no nutritional value for they contain sugar, preservatives, and carbon- di- oxide. Those ingredients are not good for our health.

9. Every bright star is a sun, like our own sun. This means that stars are huge balls of glowing gases. They are so hot that if a piece of steel were placed there it would disappear in cloud of gas! In many of the stars, the gases are very thin. This is because the particles, or atoms, of matter in the gas are far apart. But stars will have matter in them. We know, for example, that the sun contains more than sixty of the chemical elements present in the earth.

10. He said to them, “Go straight on this road and turn left at the big tamarind tree. You will see the open kitchen door where Mother is. Go! Go!” Then he looked around for a safe place for some salt. Finally he put the bag in the river where the water was very shallow. “here” he said to himself, “now nobody will walk away with it”. In no time Ramu was with his friends, playing and shouting to his heart’s content.

11. An astronomer used to walk around every night and watch the stars. Once, as he was wandering on the outskirts of the city and gazing at the stars, he fell into a well. When he was shouting and crying for help, someone ran to the well, and after listening to his story, remarked, “My good man, while you are trying to look at the mysteries in Heaven you must not overlook the common objects that are at your feet.

12. Scientists study the way planets move round the Sun. The sun has nine planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. They are natural satellites of the Sun and they travel round the sun in different paths or orbits. Planets are controlled by the Sun’s gravity and also by their own speed. The gravity is very strong and pulls these planets towards the Sun. If the Sun had no gravity, the planets would shoot towards far off stars and disappear. Instead, they travel round the Sun in an almost circular path, and they cannot escape.

13. Twenty six years ago Western Railways in a rare display of farsightedness issued an advertisement in the Bombay papers inviting people to book their tickets for the first Republic Day parade of the year 2000. One of those who responded to advertisement was Fakruddin Takila. He bought a ticket from Bombay to Delhi to the Rajadhani Express on 19th January, 2000. Now Mr. Takula is all set to go to New Delhi and Western Railways has made arrangements of accommodate him on the Rajadhani Express on the date shown on the ticket.

14. Halley’s Comet comes once in 76 years, so most people get to see it just once. Kaushik Pundit has seen it twice. Pundit, a centenarian to Mumbai first saw Halley’s Comet when he was barely 14 years old, “Half 4 some sky was lit up by its tail” he adds. The second time was in February 1986. he was invited to see the sight from the Nehru Planetarium in Mumbai. He was terribly disappointed as he “could barely see its tail”.

15. One day, we had an unusual guest. It was around 7 p.m. and most of us were watching the evening film on the television. The front door, which leads into the drawing room, was open. The whole building was quite as is common on Sunday evenings. Suddenly the evening calm had obviously disturbed them, though no one went to find out why. To the surprise of everyone, a strange bird flew inside the house, followed by a crow.
